Vitarka Mudra

Vitarka Mudra

  • May 19, 2014

The Vitarka mudra is the gesture of teaching and discussion. The right hand is at chest level with palm facing outwards. The tips of the index finger and thumb are joined creating a mystic circle. The left hand is on the lap with palm facing upwards. The tips of the index finger and thumb are joined creating a mystic circle. The three other fingers of each hand are extended. The mystic circle joined by the index finger and thumb signifies the transmission and discussion of the Buddha’s teachings. The intention of the circle is to sustain the continual flow of energy. The Vitarka mudra is also the symbol of perfection.

If you are not familiar with mudras or would like a refresher, please read my introduction to mudras.

Mudra Mantra
When making the Vitarka mudra, repeat this mantra, or verse that holds meaning, slowly and intentionally. Allow the energy of the mudra and the power of the mantra to penetrate ever more deeply.
May I maintain the constant flow of energy.
May I recognize no beginning or end.

“Your vision will become clear
Only when you look into your heart.
Who looks outside, dreams.
Who looks inside, awakens.”
–Carl Jung
