The Abhaya mudra is the gesture of fearlessness and protection. It is the mudra used by the Buddha immediately after he attained enlightenment. The Abhaya mudra signifies a sense of strength and inner security. It emanates the potential to subdue dangerous forces.
The right hand is raised shoulder height with the arm bent, the palm facing outwards, and the fingers upright and together. The left hand is alongside the body.
If you are not familiar with mudras or would like a refresher, please read my introduction to mudras.
When making the Abhaya mudra, repeat this mantra, or verse that holds meaning, slowly and intentionally. Allow the energy of the mudra and the power of the mantra to penetrate ever more deeply.
“May I be fearless.”
“May I have inner security.”
“Our greatest glory is not in never falling,
But in rising every time we fall.”
